In Scott County, residents have access to door-to-door public transportation with only a phone call to the Southern Indiana Transit System.
Residents can travel to doctor’s appointments, go grocery shopping, stop by an automotive repair shop, drop off at a park or recreation area, or run errands around Scott County for a small fare. As a door-to-door service, the driver will escort the passenger from the door of the place where the passenger is being picked up at and will accompany them to the main entrance door of the destination.
“We work to make sure we are meeting the needs of the community,” said Roland Lemus, transportation services director at Blue River Services Inc. Southern Indiana Transit System is a division of Blue River Services Inc.
To use the service, residents call a dispatcher to request a ride. On the phone, riders have to provide some demographic information, about the location of the trip, whether specific accommodations needed, and other contact information. The service is not a taxi service though, Lemus said.
“We have success stories and people thanking us,” Lemus said. “We are focusing on our customers’ demand response. […] If we have the means, we want to provide it.”
Each Southern Indiana Transit System driver is certified in CPR and first aid, hold a public passenger chauffeur’s license, undergo routine drug and alcohol screenings, and compliant with Department of Transportation regulations. The Southern Indiana Transit System vehicles are disability accessible, allows riders to carry portable oxygen tanks, and even permits service animals and pets that meet the pet policy guidelines.
“We’re there to provide public transportation,” Lemus said. “It’s for the public.”
The Southern Indiana Transit System started in Scot County in 2001 and is funded through the Indiana Department of Transportation. INDOT keeps track of how many trips the Southern Indiana Transit System makes each quarter.
“We’ve been in Scott County ever since,” Lemus said.
In addition to providing services to the county, Blue River Services Inc. participates in local community events from picnics to Haunted Downtown to the Christmas parade. Blue River Services Inc. is also a member of the Scott County Chamber of Commerce, Lemus said.
“We are committed to Scott County,” Lemus said.
