Tonight, Scott County residents will come together to celebrate a long-standing, friendly rivalry between Austin High School and Scottsburg High School to raise money for the youth projects in their community.
At 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, the Scott County Youth Grantmaking Council will host its fourth annual Thanksgiving Throwback Throwdown basketball game at Rigel Gym in Austin. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults, and concessions will be available. A Turkey Shoot-Out contest will be held between the men’s and women’s games, and the winner will receive $100.
The annual holiday basketball game is a fundraiser for the Scott County Youth Grantmaking Council, a program of the Scott County Community Foundation. For the last 10 years, the Scott County Youth Grantmaking Council works together as a team to learn about community service, leadership, teamwork, fundraising, and grantmaking. In the spring, organizations in the community submit grant proposals to help the youth in Scott County; the Youth Grantmaking Council uses the funds it raises from the Thanksgiving Throwback Throwdown to make those grant proposals a reality. Last year, the Scott County Youth Grantmaking Council awarded $5,800 in grants for youth-related projects.
“The YGC has two endowment funds to support their grantmaking, and they do fundraisers every year to supplement their grants and support their mission. They always receive more requests than the funding they have, so this will be a great addition to help close that gap,” said Jaime Toppe, executive director of the Scott County Community Foundation.
