A Scott County student will receive a full-tuition, four-year college scholarship after being named the Scott County Community Foundation 2018 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.
Scottsburg High School senior Isaak Mount, the son of Jason and Shannon Mount, was selected as this year’s recipient of the Scott County Community Foundation 2018 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar. As the winner of this year’s scholarship, Mount will receive full tuition to an accredited public or private nonprofit college or university in Indiana of his choice and a $900 yearly stipend for books and equipment.
“I was surprised,” Mount said. “I will be able to consider many more colleges than I did before.”
In college, Mount plans to major in math and is considering economics.
“I’ve always loved math. It’s something I am good at,” Mount said. “It’s like analyzing the world with numbers.”
Along with being named this year’s Scott County Community Foundation 2018 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar, Mount is a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist. As a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, Mount is one of 16,000 students in the nation recognized for his outstanding merit and scores on his Preliminary SAT. National Merit Scholarship semifinalists are designated on a state-representational basis, so not only is a student one of the top scoring students nationwide, the student is among the highest scoring entrants in his or her state. In February, Mount will find out if he becomes a finalist.
Mount is ranked top in his class maintaining a 4.0-grade point average, a recipient of the SHS gold academic award, and a member of the state championship SHS Academic Team in the interdisciplinary category. He also received third-place at the state competition as a member of the SHS Academic Team in science. Mount is the president of the Scott County Youth Grantmaking Council, captain of the SHS Academic Teams in math and science, a member of the SHS chapter of the National Honor Society, a section leader in percussion for the Band of Warriors, and a member of the SHS swim team.
“I am honored and proud to be the Lilly Scholar,” Mount said.
Since 1998, Scott County has had 37 Lilly Scholar recipients. In Indiana, 143 scholarships were awarded this year.
