The people of Scott County value their own pets as much as they value their own family. However, pet ownership can sometimes be costly. There is now a service in Scott County that helps pet owners take some of that financial responsibility off of their shoulders, and gives back to those who take care of their pets.
The Pet Pantry is a community based Christian outreach program that benefit the cats and dogs of Scott County, and their owners. This is a service to the community of Scott County, and there are no qualifications, or proof of income, or verification of address to participate. The Pet Pantry very much benefits the pets, but also helps the pet owners with some of the financial responsibilities that comes along with responsible pet ownership.
“Pets are near and dear to owner’s hearts. If you touch the owner’s pets, you’re touching the heart of the owner,” said volunteer Sue Rose.
The Pet Pantry runs the last Saturday of each month and starts at 9:00 AM. They serve families until 11:00 a.m. The starting point for the Pet Pantry is at the Warrior Reservation, within Linza Graham Park. This Christian outreach program serves around 250 families each month. The basic needs of cat and dog food are provided. All products from this ministry are new items, and range from cat and dog food, cat litter, treats, and other miscellaneous pet items.
“A righteous man cares for the needs of his animals.” — Proverbs 12:10
To participate in the Pet Pantry, there is a semi-trailer located on the Warrior Reservation, between City Street and Auto Collision. People meet at the starting point, which is the Warrior Reservation, at 9:00 AM, and receive a number to line up and go through the trailer to pick up what they need for the month. This program is in its 7th year of operation and is run entirely by volunteers. This community service shows that animals in Scott County are valued as much as their owners, and deserve the same quality of life.
