New Superintendent Brings Experience Back to Hometown

July 31, 2019 By Lauren Bowling Leave a Comment

Newly appointed Superintendent Trevor Jones is coming back home to serve as a leader for Scott County School District 1.  He is taking the place of now retired school superintendent, Robert D. Anderson. Jones, a graduate of Austin High School in 1984, brings with him a lot of experience and education to his new position.

After graduating from Austin High, Jones went on to play baseball at Columbia State in Tennessee; he also later attend the University of Memphis.  He got his Bachelor and Master degrees from Indiana University Southeast, and his educational specialist degree from Indiana State University where he is a doctorial candidate.  Jones has quite the resume as he previously has taught school in Memphis, Tennessee. Once moving back to Indiana he served Southwestern for 19 years as a middle school principal, a coach, an athletic director, then moving up to being the superintendent for the past four years.  Although Jones is just starting his career at Austin, he has big plans to make SCSD1 schools a great place to learn.

“To end my career here in Austin would be great,” Jones said.

Growing up in Austin, Jones is thrilled to be back and serving in his hometown.

“I’m really excited to be back in Austin,” Jones added. “I hope I can give back to the people in Austin what they gave to me growing up.”

Jones has big plans for SCSD1, and has already started implementing some of them to the upcoming school year.  This year all of SCSD1 will be offering a free breakfast and lunch program to all students. There is also going to be a health clinic set up within the schools that is free to both students and staff.  He also has plans in the work on a referendum to start building a new elementary school that is greatly needed.

Jones plans to expand on the academy and pathways system in which Austin, Southwestern, and Crothersville schools partner.   This academy offers students the opportunity to earn college credits free while in high school.   In 2019, Austin graduated 27 students with Associates degrees.  Jones plans to expand on the academy, and hopes for even more growth in coming years.

These are just some of the plans Jones has for SCSD1, and all of the new additions are just the beginning.  The future looks bright for SCSD1, as they welcome home Trevor Jones.
