Plans of a perfect prom are something most high school girls dream about. In reality, it can be quite expensive – and oftentimes not everything they had dreamed. One of the newest charity events in town, Blessings for Prom, is making sure that those girls get that prom of their dreams.
The director of the charity, Mandy (Bayes) Petersen, created the program back in 2015 in memory of her grandmother, Dottie Shelhamer.
“The program was created in memory of my Gram who was known for the positive influence she made on the Austin High School community,” said Petersen. “She was a teacher, counselor, and coach for AHS for over 40 years. Her dedication to her school, community, and family did not go unnoticed. She was notorious for helping high school students who faced financial burdens to attend their prom and go on their senior trip.”
Blessings for Prom allows any high school female to attend a ‘Dress Day’ every year where they will receive a dress, shoes, jewelry, dress alterations and a Bible at no cost to them. Registration for the event will opens in January.
“Our plan is to make prom dreams come true for every girl in our community,” added Petersen. “Our main goal this year is to be sure that all high school students know about this event.”
Any high school female from any school in the county is eligible to sign up for this event. The date and location of this year’s ‘Dress Day’ is still to be determined, but there are many preparations that still need to go into an event of this magnitude.
“The community can help back this event by providing donations, volunteering for ‘Dress Day’, and helping spread the word of the event to ensure all high school students in our area are aware,” said Petersen.
“Our dress selection is amazing! We have so many nice designer dresses to offer,” Petersen added.
Last year there were 78 girls who signed up, and Petersen is hoping for even bigger numbers this year.
If you would like to donate to this event there is a need for prom dresses in any size, dress shoes in all sizes, and jewelry. These donations can be dropped off at Fashions in Flowers located at 401 S Gardner Street in Scottsburg.
With many proms coming up this spring, interested volunteers for this event should contact Mandy Petersen or visit the Blessings for Prom Facebook page to inquire.
